Quenching Thirst in the Desert

Hi folks, this is Henry, Lucia’s invisible half.  Last month I became a wedding photographer for a day when I stood in for Isabella at the first annual Thirst Relief Benefit Shoot in Las Vegas. I’m sure y’all are stunned to hear that my pictures did not win any award at the following day’s WPPI Conference, but I had an absolute blast at the shoot. Lucia and I met a busload of new friends, learned from some of the best in the biz, and along the way raised money for a wonderful organization called Thirst Relief. I was so impressed with what I had learned that day, I asked to write this post so I can share with you a bit about this charity and the amazing people who make it happen.

Some background: Thirst Relief makes clean water available to people without access to any.  According to the World Health Organization, 1/5 of the world’s population don’t have clean, disease- and parasite-free water to drink and use.  Some 30,000 people die needlessly each week from contaminated water, most of them children.  Thirst Relief has been partnering with local organizations across three continents to build and install water filters at a cost of less than $5 per person served.  What a beautiful thing! We can do so much with so little.

Wedding photographer Jim Davis-Hicks founded Thirst Relief five years ago, and his “philanthropic photography” has inspired many others in the industry to devote personal time and resources to this noble cause.  This year’s benefit shoot was set up as a fund-raising auction where we vie for the chance to go on a mock wedding shoot led by celebrity photographers Mike Colón and the father and son team David and Luke Edmonson. Thanks to Isabella’s astute eBay bidding skills, we landed two of these highly coveted spots and spent a memorable afternoon in Red Rock Canyon. Here are two of our leaders aboard the party bus, Luke in the cap and Mike in the beanie:

Our first volunteer models were Aric and Casey, themselves photographers who were just married last Fall.  Casey dragged her own wedding dress through the brambles and kept her smile glowing despite the winter desert cold.  And it was bitterly cold!  Lucia and I were bundled in ski jackets and I still almost lost my fingers to frostbite.  Casey and Aric, I don’t know how you guys survived it, but thank you so much for your sacrifice, and for your patience with my novice attempts at posing.

Nathan and Jessica, our other newlywed couple, have a fascinating story:  They booked Jim Davis-Hicks to shoot their wedding last year and were moved by his philanthropic ideals into joining Thirst Relief.  According to Jim, they are now indispensable part of the organization, where they work almost full time but receive compensation for only a fraction of those hours.  Jessica not only organized this benefit shoot, the two of them modeled for us all afternoon and into the evening.  Bravo to you both!

By the way, I took this picture.  :DLucia and Isabella love this headpiece.

Being a non-profit has its advantages.  Luke Edmonson walked into the Gallery at CityCenter and persuaded them to let a dozen photographers and equipment crowd into their hall.  What’s the chance that we’ll ever shoot another bride against a backdrop of Dale Chihuly’s glass work?  Kudos to the Gallery for supporting our charity!

I particularly like this picture with Mandarin Oriental in the background.  I believe Lucia was the only one in the group who thought to shoot at this angle and had the right lens to pull it off:

Another Thirst Relief shoot is featured in the current issue of Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, with pictures shot on location in Tanzania by Mike, David, Luke, and many other wedding photographers.  Those photographers all donated quite a bit of money and paid their own way to see the charity’s work first hand.  Jason Thon, who was at our dinner table, related his experiences from that trip, which he called “life changing”.  Makes us proud to be a part of this community!

Laura and Brandon’s Engagement :: “She Found Love In Japan”

Imagine you are on a trainee assignment in a foreign land, with only 6 months left to stay and fully enjoying your experience abroad.  Out of nowhere came this guy, marching into your life, undeterred by your rejections and attempts to remain distant.  You gave in, just for a coffee, only to find out afterward that you are stumbling madly into love with this guy.  And a short six months later, he’s on his knee in front of you, with people rushing by all around, while the big screen on the street displayed: Will You Marry Me?

It may sound like a whirlwind love story fit for a romantic novel or movie, but this is the real life love story of Laura and Brandon.

Laura is a dreamer, a teacher, an aspiring writer, and a yoga-loving vegetarian from England who was on assignment in Japan.  She met Brandon at a party hosted by a mutual friend.  Knowing that she’s only in Tokyo for a short period and wanting to keep focused on her dream of being a writer as well as to fully enjoy her time left in the country, Laura was determined to stay clear of relationships.  That is, until Brandon’s persistence made her give in and agree to go out for coffee with him.   That rainy Sunday afternoon in the little cake shop in Jiyugaoka made Laura discover what a fascinating person Brandon really is.  He’s a business school graduate who had grown up in Taiwan and worked in the States before he came to Japan.  Not only does he share the same interests in writing and teaching (Brandon was in the process of writing a GMAT guidebook, which is now published and selling on Amazon), he had also just returned from an orchestra tour from New York, where he played violin on stage with Yo-Yo Ma in Carnegie Hall.  Laura was drawn to Brandon as she discovered more and more interesting sides to him; and despite their different upbringings and characters, they just CLICKED.

In the following months, they spent time together and went on several trips.  They also enjoyed vegetarian dining and cooking together (Brandon gave up meat for a week as an experiment, and has never touched it since), and by the time her traineeship was over, Laura found herself unable to leave Japan.  One Friday evening, Brandon surprised Laura at Shibuya square, as he got down on one knee, with flashing lights from the big screen above the crowd displaying a picture of the two, and huge words stating: “Laura P., Will You Marry Me? Brandon W.”  Without hesitation, Laura gave him a firm and enthusiastic YES!

Laura wrote down her story and it was published in BAB magazine.  You can read this romantic story as well as see the picture of Brandon’s proposal here:  A stunning Proposal, by Laura Jane Pepper.  In this article Laura shared her realization of what makes a “perfect relationship”:

I have come to see that the perfect relationship is one that does not get in the way of your dreams, but helps you to find them…

These two lovebirds have since decided to come back to the U.S. and build their new nest here.  They also have a fabulous wedding planned in England later this year.

We are very lucky to have the chance to help capture some romantic and loving pictures of Laura and Brandon.  When we first met the couple at lunch before the shoot, we were thinking: Oh no!  Maybe we made a mistake by bringing them to San Juan Capistrano for the shoot!  Since the two struck us as more of a “modern” and “hip” couple and San Juan Capistrano feels more old-town-vintage-like and mellow-toned.   However, as soon as we start to shoot, our worries and doubt melted away.  Laura and Brandon are so in love with each other and the connection that shows through when they look into each other’s eyes or lock their lips are just so compelling that any background or setting would just be a subtle addition to their loveliness and wouldn’t even have mattered.   Actually, we found that their hip and fashionable style really popped with the old town juxtaposition. We will let you be the judge of that. =)

We saw this cute VW Beattle and had to take a picture with it!

They are cool and fun-loving, and so in-sync with each other’s move and mood.

Beautiful Laura

Love this look!

Jump and reach for the sky!

So in love.  This is one of our favorites from the day:

More of that cool and fun-loving panache:

Loads of smiles :)

And kisses!

We look at these pictures and couldn’t help but to break into big smiles =)

This is our favorite picture of the day.  The smile in Brandon’s eyes, the glow on Laura’s face.  It’s just stunning and heartfelt.

A bit of flair.  Lots of love.

All Aboard!  Next stop: Happily Ever After.

Tristen and Kevin PREVIEW:: Wedding Engagement, Vintage-Styled

(We are so backlogged in organizing and posting photos due to the time spent on the creation of our brand and this blog site.  Here is an event from last year for preview now (if that makes sense? :p)  We will post lots more pictures from this session soon.   Thanks for your patience! )

Just a little before Christmas last year Lucia and I went to our second shootout event – “The Great Gatsby”, this time with the SoCal Photog Shootout group.  When we first saw the Facebook announcement we were scratching our brains out wondering what “The Great Gatsby” is all about. A closer read into the details of the event revealed terms such as Vintage, 1930s, Glamour, etc.

AND WE WERE HOOKED.

Registration opened at 7pm on a Wednesday night, and the spots were SOLD OUT in 6 MINUTES!!!

Then came the actual day of the event. We had been getting rain for the whole week prior to that… but fortunately, the clouds cleared up! Photographer Garrett Davis graciously hosted the group in his studio located in the quaint Claremont Village. Our big sis (yes we have one more!) went to Claremont College for her Graduate studies in MIS, but we never really discovered this part of Claremont then. It was such a pleasant discovery and we kept on saying we need to come back to take more photos or just for strolling down the charming streets.

The shootout was fun and informative. We were organized into small groups to rotate at different stations, with Leaders Garrett, Wai Reyes, Hanssie Trainor, Matthew Saville, Michelle Cunningham giving us good pointers and tips throughout the whole event. My favorite group has to be Garrett’s, featuring a REAL COUPLE, Tristen and Kevin, who’s getting married in May 2010. Tristen wore a gorgeous wedding gown from La Bomba Vintage Dresses, and a special, hand-crafted bridal hair piece from Bows N Berries Hairbands. (Makeup and Hair are by: Kacee Geoffroy , Alisha Baijounas). The goal for Garrette’s group was to achieve relaxed, romantic portraits working with a real couple. I think we were able to pull it off with some great restuls, and that restored 1930 Oldsmobile certainly added to the feeling of Vintage Old World Charm!

Here are a few preview pictures of this adorable pair of lovebirds.:
