It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in Mission Viejo at the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, and Daddy Henry and Mommy Haej pulled out all the stops to create an enchanting, festive celebration for baby Dylan’s first birthday. I wanted to make sure to blog and share images from this set because the event was one of those special celebrations at which I kept catching myself thinking:”I wish I am attending this as a guest!” (and a kid!) I love the venue, with all the greenery outside, and the rustic wood doors and ceiling beams throughout the banquet room. Haej, with her wonderful aesthetic senses as a talented designer, created custom posters that served both as decorations and boards for party games. There were all sorts of whimsical pieces and thoughtful touches everywhere — vintage airplanes, birdcages, topiaries, crayons for the little ones to draw with, a variety of munchies to choose from as desserts and favors. In additional to the main Dojabi ceremony, kids were lining up to get custom created balloons, and towards the end there was a puppet show set up outside under the shade, complete with ice cold lemonades to compliment the viewing experience! What a lovely and fun-filled day!

He had just woken up from a nap when we started shooting…

I love the mix of simple whimsical and classy vintage:

And the birthday cake:

These lollipop things were a big hit with the little ones:

When the balloon lady came, all kids flocked to this end of the room:

Hello Kitty!

Dylan was initially shy and crying at the Doljabi ceremony, but quickly recovered and made his choice – book (scholar)!

Happy Birthday Dylan!

A puppet show on wheels (this is a self-contained theatre on wheels, modeled after an Italian Opera House in Milan) drove in and set up stage:

I wasn’t watching the show as I was focused on taking pictures, but there were Pirates and Dragons; and at one point, it was raining bubbles!

Dylan clapping for the show:

I also love that they provided ice cold lemonade and tea for guests to enjoy with the show:

Wedding at Brentwood Country Club

Last month I had the honor to work once again as a second shooter for my good friend Gayla from Gayla Elizabeth Photography.  For those who don’t know Gayla, she is not only a talented photographer, but an amazing person with a big heart.  In fact, she is an important reason for the smooth start of my photography career.  It was shortly after we first met that I booked my first wedding. Although I knew all the techniques and procedures, I was still nervous about running into unexpected hitches, so I asked Gayla to shoot with me. She accepted without hesitation even though she was an experienced pro and I was just a beginner.  On the day of the event, she guided me through the whole day by giving me tips on scouting locations, tackling timing and logistics, and interacting with clients and keeping them happy. Since then, we have shot a few more weddings for each other, and each has been a learning experience for me.  I will always be grateful for what Gayla had done for me and treasure our friendship.

Gayla, thank you for everything! Enjoy spending time with your family in Hawaii!  :-)

Here are a few of my favorite images from the most recent event.  Love how happy and excited our bride was:

The groom was having a good time too:

What a beautiful smile! It melts my heart.

The bride wanted a shot of both of them under the veil.  I think it turned out beautifully.

Walking down the aisle with daddy:

Non-stop smiling and giggling the whole day!

Lots of beautiful details.  And the cake was really yummy!  :-)

Outdoor Maternity Session:: Reena and Hero Part II

Awhile ago we blogged about Reena and Hero’s first maternity session. For those of you who haven’t read the post, Hero bought a maternity photo package as a birthday/anniversary gift for Reena.  The package entails a mini 30-min studio session every month to document the changes during pregnancy, as well as a full portrait session outdoors to celebrate and capture their love for each other at this exciting time of their lives.  Last Sunday we held the outdoors portrait session at the beautiful El Dorado East Park located in the city of Long Beach. Reena and Hero went earlier during the day to picnic with friends, and joined us before sunset for the photo session. They looked adorable and full of joy with the anticipation of their baby girl!

Without further ado, here are some of our favorites from the day:

They opted for a casual everyday look, to let us capture their genuine, natural, fun-loving personalities.

Love Reena’s glowing smile:

One of my faves of the day:

Listening to the baby:

Hmm… wonder what secrets did the baby tell?

You can see how much Hero loves her by the way he looks at her:

I think Reena is a gorgeous mommy-to-be:

A perfect relaxing day with perfect light…

Hero just told her how proud he was of her, and here’s her reaction:

Reena and Hero — thank you for the fun day! Congrats!
